Liver Abscess, complicated with acute renal failure, Cured by Homeopathy: A Case Study

This case illustrates the efficacy of homoeopathic medicine even in conditions traditionally regarded as surgical diseases. A 70‑year‑old male, a habitual drinker, presented with persistent fever. He had initially been treated by an allopathic physician without benefit and was subsequently admitted to hospital. Investigations revealed a liver abscess with approximately 500 ml of pus involving both the right and left lobes of the liver, accompanied by acute renal failure. Clinically, the patient was severely constipated and continued to suffer from fever. Despite the conventional view that liver abscess is a purely surgical condition, this case demonstrates how individualized homoeopathic treatment can achieve remarkable results, offering relief where other systems had failed

Liver Abscess, complicated with acute renal failure, Cured by Homeopathy: A Case Study
Case Summary
Patient: 70 years, male
Diagnosis:

Liver abscess (Confirmed by U.S.G.)

Chief Complaints:

1. High grade fever has the tendency to aggravate in evening. 2. Severe abdominal pain along with right sided chest pain. 3. Inactive bowel (obstipated constipation) 4. sleeplessness (unable to get sleep)

Treatment:

First prescription - Nux vomica - 200 (Single dose) Second prescription - Merc sol - 30 (Multiple dose)

Outcome:

28/01/2015, I have received the case. 05/02/2025, Patient reported on the clinic with the statement of he has no complaint except weakness. liver abscess was in resolving phase, urea/creatinine was absolutely normal.

Case Reception

On the evening of 28/01/2015, the patient’s elder son contacted me regarding his father’s deteriorating health. He reported that his father had been suffering from chill fever for the past 15 days. During this period, the patient had received treatment from a reputed allopathic physician in the city, who diagnosed him with malaria fever based on investigations and prescribed anti-malarial drugs.
Despite treatment, the patient’s condition worsened day by day. He was subsequently admitted to a hospital, where further investigations revealed the following pathology:
1. Large liver abscess involving both right and left lobes.
2. Acute renal failure (elevated urea and creatinine).
3. Increased leucocyte count (TLC 32,000/dl).
4. Malaria parasite test (FM method) positive.
5. Blood urea: 140 mg/dl.
6. Serum creatinine: 3.40 mg/dl.
After prolonged allopathic treatment, the patient became hopeless, as abscess drainage was considered the only option, and no cure was available for renal failure. At this stage, the patient consulted me.

Clinical Presentation (28/01/2015)

On his first visit to my clinic, the patient appeared extremely weak, barely able to walk. He complained of:

  • Severe abdominal pain radiating to the right chest.
  • Ineffectual urging for vomiting, constantly present.
  • Evening chill fever episodes.
  • Constipation, with no stool passed for the last 7 days.

On detailed case history-taking, it was noted that the patient was an old drunkard with a history of abdominal complaints.

Prescription

After thorough case analysis, I prescribed:

  • Nux Vomica 200 (single dose).
  • Placebo for 7 days.

Follow-Up (05/02/2015)

On review, the patient reported significant improvement:

  • No complaints except weakness.
  • . Blood Pressure: 80/60 mmHg.
  • . Blood Sugar (Fasting): 98 mg/dl.
  • . Urination normal.
  • . Defecation normal.
  • . Thirst normal.
  • . Appetite increased.

Investigations (11/02/2015)

Repeat investigations revealed remarkable improvement:

  1. TLC count: Normalized to 11,800/cmm (previously 32,000/cmm).
  2. Malaria parasite test: Negative.
  3. Blood urea: Reduced to 32.16 mg/dl (previously 140 mg/dl).
  4. Serum creatinine: Reduced to 1.21 mg/dl (previously 3.40 mg/dl).

Outcome

The liver abscess resolved spontaneously over a period of six months. The patient was cured completely under the effect of Nux Vomica 200 and Mercurius Solubilis 30

Conclusion

This case demonstrates the curative potential of Homoeopathic medicine Nux Vomica, supported by Mercurius Solubilis, in a severe presentation of liver abscess with renal failure, particularly in patients with a background of chronic alcoholism.
